This month’s featured artist is Chhaya’s very own Kara Sankus!
Kara is a talented illustrator and animator who strives to make work that is collaborative within the Philadelphia community. Kara has created pieces under printmaker Patricia Smith, and designs promotional artwork for the experimental multidisciplinary performance group Plant Me Here, while also making music videos, and dabbling in freelance design. Her work has been shown in the Women in Animation Film Festival at Moore College of Art and Design, LASS by The Productive Studios in New York, and The Animex International Festival of Animation and Computer Games in England.
When asked about this particular body of work and her inspirations for it Kara’s response was:
“I wanted to explore the theme of personal space through the use of stark, simple illustrations that are playful in their juxtaposition of contrasting colors and imagery, paired with more dire words or quotes over them. Some of these drawings simply take up most of the composition to achieve a more claustrophobic effect, while some use the text to speak for them.”
Kara was born and raised in Wilmington, DE and moved to Philadelphia to get her BFA in Animation from the University of the Arts
